Harvesting |
At the Tippland bog in Terryglass peat moss is usually harvested from May to September. During this
period, we build our inventory for the entire year. There are several steps in the process of peat moss
harvesting and production:
1. First, the area to be harvested is drained to help dry the peat moss and make it easier for the heavy
machinery to prepare for harvesting.
2. The area to be harvested cleared of all vegetation such as bushes, trees and shrubs.
3. The peat moss is conditioned using specialized equipment: rototillers, harrows and machinery
specifically designed for the peat moss industry.
4. The peat moss is allowed time to dry and it is harvested using specially designed vacuum machines
(from five to twelve centimeters of peat moss are harvested per year).
5. The harvested peat moss is taken to the plant to be screened, bagged and palletized.
6. Finally, the product is stored with protection until it is shipped.
